Our award winning entry to the Let Them Eat Cake annual wedding cake decorating contest. It was inspired by the dress Katniss Everdeen wore in the Hunger Games: Catching Fire. The planning for this cake took 6 months and many long nights before it’s release.
Some of the details throughout the cake include: sugar flowers of ranunculus, peonies and hydrangeas;
The cake board was decorated in brushed embroidery, to resemble flowers without adding too much weight.
The bottom tier was quilted fondant with texturized style and of course our favorite sugar dragees.
The second tier was made as tufted billow weave and pleats, the centers of the tufting were made as broaches.[Spoiler alert] For those that are fans of Katniss Everdeen and the Hunger Games, the “wings” on the front and back of the cake may be familiar as they were influenced by her wedding dress. We carefully made them out of fondant and then piped royal icing on those, later we added rhinestones on each side about 200 rhinestone on each side of the wing, so we are talking about 800 tiny gems.
The third tier we kept plain – in order to have that clean yet and not overwhelming overall design.
The fourth tier includes hand piped pearls that took nearly 12 hours to finish.
The fifth tier: this tier was resembling a bodice of the dress, with a huge bow in a front and corset in the back, each line, was cut individually and each string too, simple? Not really!
The sixth tier was a top tier with another flower bouquet of ranunculus, peonies and hydrangeas.
The flavor of the cake was vanilla sponge cake with passion fruit buttercream.
Proudly we can say we won “Best Student” in this cake competition.
So much more is coming…
