Let them eat cake Competition 2016.
Each year we get a chance to participate in local cake competition. City of Hope unites bakeries to bake and decorate cakes for good cause- charity for a cancer society.
This year the theme was “In Animation”. When I think of animation the one and only thing comes to my mind- Disney. Magic of the animation has been always fascinating to me. With wedding season and so many orders to fulfill I honestly did not know if we would be able to pull it off. Well it took 6 of us from planning out the design, figuring out black light options, carving, baking, sculpting, creating sugar flowers and little characters over 100 hours in labor. The cake stood up over 3.5 feet tall. We rented a truck to get all equipment and this monster into Lowes Hotel.
The cake had a story – the story of Alice in the wonderland and Mad Hatter. The story begins with Lewis Carol writing a book – which was decorated in sugar sheets and hand written chapter of Alice getting into the wonderland. Alice finds all kinds of funky stuff out there. Through the magic rabbit hole, array of magic doors, she get into the upside down world. Where she finds a rabbit with oversized pocket watch in a waist coat. Door mouse in a cup, caterpillar smoking a hookah with glow in dark letters “WHO R U?”. Mad hatter and his mad tea party with 1/2 cup of tea ( literally). Pencil birds, crazy pansies flowers with eye lashes who by the way represented each girl working at Unik Cakes. Red rose and her bud, white rose with an angel face and outgoing personality. Garden of pansies with cute little faces, tiger lily, daisies and so many more flowers. Glow in dark mome raths. Glow in dark mushrooms and our favorite checker board pattern.
Each tier of this cake was decorated in a theme of the movie. The bottom tier: rustic wood stump along with its rabbit hole and magical doors with adorable door knob. Magic glow in dark black and white funky checker board. Black tier with those googly eyes and pencil birds. Queen’s tier included chevron pattern, half black, half gold crown and painted white and red roses and playing cards. Pink and purple striped tier with Cheesier cat smile ( glow in dark too). Topped with a mad hat along with beautiful sugar flowers.
Our sample cake for the judges was lemon sponge with apricot mousse and vanilla bean Swiss meringue buttercream.
We spend over 100 hours on this cake in one week. Yes it was done on one week.
We won in two categories: “Best use of Theme” and “Most Artistic” wow what an honor to be a part of “Let them eat cake” for City of hope.
